Aegean Dreams

One of the recurring themes in my work is the passage of time and the record of past times evident in the land.  While in the Cyclades and Crete in the Aegean in late 2005 I was constantly aware of the history of the area.  The traces of ancient walls and buildings emerging from the rocky ground, the scatterings of pottery shards along beaches and unearthed in plowed fields were potent reminders of ancient worlds.  For me the old gods and goddesses were still present in the dry craggy landscape, the bright air, Homer's 'wine-dark' sea and its translucent shallows.
