PRINTS: NIHON E NO MADO – WINDOWS ON JAPAN

These works arose from a visit to Japan in the early 1990s. I have used the device of screens, blinds and windows to represent the way our view of another culture is inevitably filtered through our own cultural perspectives. This echoes too the way in which much traditional Japanese design exploits the use of screens and restricted views to focus the eye on particular details or certain aspects of landscape.
