Collograph Process

Marianne Printing Collagraph Print

A collograph plate is made by building up an image from card and paper and other materials in a collage. In these works I have incorporated pieces of bark, leaves, bits of old flattened metal, slivers of wood shavings and sand to achieve particular textures and effects.

Once all the elements are bonded together and sealed the plate is inked up like an etching plate using oil-based printing paints or inks. The excess ink is then wiped off until the desired amout of ink is left on the plate. Then moistened paper is placed face down on the inked up image and the plate and paper are passed through an etching press.

In this process the inked image is transferred from the plate to the paper.

In my work all the colours are inked up together so the one pass through the press produces the final work. Once dry most of the images are then hand finished using water colour and/or pencil.

The whole inking up process must be repeated for each print in the edition.
